This is the most important painting to come out of Paul Klee's trip to Egypt. Presumably, Klee had made a study of Egypt and its millennial culture. On the way there, stopping in Syracuse, he felt that "historical sensibility in conjunction with nature is the right thing." Such a simultaneous view of time and space is crucial in the Egyptian pictures.

About the Artist:

Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland, and is considered both a German and a Swiss painter. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was also a student of orientalism.
