In the Style of Kairouan was officially the first abstract painting by Paul Klee. He painted it in 1914, after having been to Tunisia and was inspired by the natural play of light there. The painting features a musical atmosphere in it. It is characterized by its use of pastel colors and geometric shapes, particularly rectangles.
About the Artist:
Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) was born in Munchenbuchsee, Switzerland, and is considered both a German and a Swiss painter. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He was also a student of orientalism.
