Painted as part of series of dancing subjects, Ballet Rehearsal is the work of an artist who has become closely identified with the theme of capturing movement — more than half of all of his works depict dancers. Degas captured the effects of bodily movement in the same way that Monet and Renoir replicated the shimmering effects of light on water. Rehearsal 1879 is a part of Degas' ballerina collection.
About the Artist:
Edgar Degas (1843 - 1917) was a French artist famous for his pastel drawings and oil paintings of ballerinas. Degas also produced bronze sculptures, prints, and drawings. Degas is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers.
