Van Gogh created a series of sunflower paintings in 1888. He created them as decorations for the Yellow House in Arles in which Van Gogh’s houseguest, Paul Gaugin would be staying, Unfortunately, due to a falling-out with Gaugin, after which Van Gogh sliced off his own earlobe in a paranoid panic, Van Gogh was never able to decorate his yellow house.

Vincent Willem van Gogh (1853 - 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life.
