The landscapes of Cross are abstract constructions or visions of Eden. The truthfulness of the moment mattered less than an intellectual construction resulting in a consciously sought balance. The Gold Islands (The Islands of Hyeres, Var) is a masterpiece from Henri-Edmond Cross.
About the Artist:
One of the foremost practitioners of Neo-Impressionism, Henri-Edmond Cross (1856 - 1910) produced an array of work in the final two decades of his life that played a pivotal role in the development of early twentieth-century modernist painting. Initially drawn to naturalism and then Impressionism, he eventually adopted the Pointillist technique pioneered by his friend Georges Seurat, the leader of the Neo-Impressionists.
